English Courses

International students who want to improve their English language skills can do so by attending one of the Courses by TAFE New South Wales. Beginners as well as advanced learners can pick from a multitude of courses which last from five to 50 weeks. The six English learning centres of TAFE NSW are located on the following campuses:

• Liverpool  - South Western Sydney Institute
• Kingscliff - North Coast Institute
• Port Macquarie - North Coast Institute
• Newcastle - Hunter Institute
• Wollongong - Illawarra Institute  

General English      
The following courses in General English (except for Advanced English) are available at all English learning centres of TAFE NSW:

General English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
This course is aimed at beginners and English speakers of an intermediate level and takes from five to 25 weeks. Students will develop skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Furthermore, a strong focus is set on pronunciation and vocabulary extension.

Certificate 3 in English for Further Studies
Intermediate learners will be prepared for Certificate or Diploma studies at TAFE NSW or for university. The duration varies from five to 20 weeks.
International students will be required to pass the academic IELTS test with a minimum score of 5.5 prior to Certificate and Diploma courses at TAFE Australia.

Advanced English
This course is designed for upper intermediate to advanced learners. During five to 10 weeks of training students develop high level study skills. In addition to that the program prepares students for the IELTS test, interpreting diploma or for working with English speakers.

Specific English Courses

English for Academic Purposes (EAP)
This course focuses on the preparation for further studies at Australian TAFEs, universities, etc. Topics include academic writing, listening and note taking, reading comprehension, academic speech (for oral presentations and seminars) and integrated study skills. Furthermore, the focus is set on grammar, English for social purposes, vocabulary, pronunciation and computer literacy. With passing this course students meet the lingual entry requirements to some universities.
 
Available at Ultimo (Sydney Institute), Kingscliff (North Coast Institute), Port Macquarie (North Coast Institute) and Newcastle (Hunter Institute).

IELTS preparation
This course is tailor-made to prepare students for the IELTS test.

• Available at all of the six English learning centres

Cambridge examination course
The following Cambridge Certificates can be obtained:

• Certificate of Proficiency (CPE)
• Certificate of Advanced English (CAE)
• First Certificate (FCE)
• Business English Certificate (BEC)
• Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) (Preparation is offered as part of the 10 week BEC courses)

Special programs, short courses and study tours
There is a multitude of courses on offer for professionals, study tour groups, young people on a working holiday and students on a visitor visa, these include:

• English for Aircraft Maintenance
• English Language Skills for the Health Care Profession
• Occupational English Test (OET) Preparation Business English Certificate (BEC)
• English for business, media studies and Australian life
• General English (ESOL)
• Cambridge examination courses (maximum 12 weeks full or part-time)
